Local Asbestos Services are a fully licensed HSE asbestos removal contractor. The removal of asbestos is a specialised service and should be carried out by personnel who are fully trained and competent to do so.
All of our asbestos removal projects are fully compliant with the Control Of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
These regulations were introduced to help employers control the potential exposure of asbestos not only to their employees, but also to members of the public.
We pride ourselves on our high work standards and safety ethics that enables us to provide our clients with a stress free solution for their asbestos removal requirements.
Licensed asbestos removal works
The licensing system is a strict process put in place to ensure that employers carrying out higher risk work on asbestos can demonstrate that they are competent to carry out the work. Licensee’s have to show that they have the necessary knowledge, experience and expertise to protect the health and safety of their employees, themselves and others.
Contractors that haven’t held a license before will receive a 12 month license. LAS were recently issued a new three year license in May 2018.
Some materials that usually require a license to be removed are:
- Asbestos insulation board
- Asbestos pipe lagging
- Asbestos sprayed coating
- Asbestos loose fill insulation
When removing asbestos materials that fall under this license, extra controls must be put in place due to the potential fiber release into the air. The works must be notified to the HSE 14 days before the removal takes place.
Asbestos enclosures must be in place with air extraction equipment to help the reduce the numbers of potential asbestos fibers in the air to a measurement which is under the legal control limit. Also, powered full face respirators worn by the operatives will help lower their exposure to asbestos as low as reasonably practicable.
None licensed asbestos removal works
Some removal of asbestos does not require a license to be removed. However, the personnel performing the removal must be fully trained and competent to do so.
A material that does not require a license will usually have a low potential of fiber release, be sporadic/low intensity and be carried out in a way that does not exceed the legal control limit.
Some materials that usually do not require a license to be removed are:
- Decorative textured coating (Artex)
- Floor tiles
- Asbestos cement products
- Asbestos gaskets
Depending on the condition of the material being worked on, the removal works may be notifiable to the HSE/local authority but will still not require a license to be removed. This will usually be notified 24 hours before work commences and is commonly known as NNLW.
